Orlando resident James Gibson, 39, was arraigned on an 18-count indictment on Tuesday, Sept. 24 charging him for allegedly attempting to steal the high-end convertible.

District Attorney Madeline Singas said that on Thursday, Aug. 22, Gibson allegedly attempted to purchase a 2015 Bentley Continental GT V8 Convertible with a value of approximately $135,000 from a car dealership in Jericho.

It is alleged that Gibson signed paperwork in the name of an identity theft victim and gave the dealer a forged New Jersey’s driver’s license with his photograph and the personal information of his victim.

Singas said that after the dealer ran a credit check, the victim became aware of an attempted purchase in his name and called the dealership to stop the sale of the Bentley. The dealership then contacted the Nassau County Police Department without alerting Gibson’s alleged victim.

“While the dealership waited for NCPD to arrive at the scene, employees continued with the transaction as if nothing was wrong,” Singas said. Gibson was arrested shortly thereafter without further incident and he was found to be in possession of a fraudulent credit card.

Gibson was arrested and charged with attempted grand larceny, five counts of forgery, six counts of identity theft, three counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument, attempted identity theft, falsifying business records and attempted grand larceny.

Singas said that bail was continued at $300,000 bond or $150,000 cash bail. Gibson is due back in court on Thursday, Oct. 3. If convicted, Gibson faces up to seven years in prison.
